A French Touch Down Under
Cairns artist Nathaly
Molliet spent her childhood in France before moving
to Chicago (USA) to study Fine Arts fifteen years ago.
Since then, she has been painting and running galleries
from the Caribbeans via Canada and Thailand before settling
in Australia in 2001.
Her style has evolved with
each place, only retaining the true flavours and influences
of each destination. She returned from China last year
after studying printing techniques at the Xian Academy
of Fine Arts. While there, she created a series of silk
screen prints of Chinese landmarks including the famous
Terracotta Warriors of Xian. Upon her return to Cairns,
she opened the Clifton Beach Gallery where she displays
her lacquered abstract works, pure in design but original
and trendy.
The process may involve
layering papyrus, banana leaves or rice papers with gold
leaves and 400 year old Chinese coins. To seal the
painting, a resin is later applied to enhance the rich
colors of the materials used. The harmony and contrast
brings an emphasis on visual sensation and emotional reaction
and while the turquoise and the gold series simulate our
beautiful beaches and have a calm and soothing effect,
the red exotic series will transport you to the Orient. |
